Stories (9)

The Grease Drip Revolution: Modernizing the Rodeo
Dave describes the logistical evolution of the Lehi Roundup Rodeo concessions. In the early days, individual LDS wards brought their own equipment, which was inefficient. Dave and the committee transitioned to a centralized system, purchasing professional equipment for all volunteers. He recounts the specific 'grease drip' problem where 40 years of accumulated grease would drip from the ceiling on hot days. By installing ceilings, plumbing, gas lines, and walk-in coolers, they transformed a makeshift operation into a professional-grade kitchen that reinvests its profits back into the rodeo and ward floats.
Life Lesson
Stewardship means leaving a place better than you found it, often through the unglamorous work of infrastructure and logistics.
Community Significance
The concessions are the financial engine that funds the iconic 'mini-floats' for the Lehi parade, linking the rodeo to the broader community celebration.

The Volunteer Pipeline: Cultivating the Next Generation of Teachers
In a brief but powerful moment, Heather mentions that several of the center’s current paid teachers were once students in the program as children. They transitioned from being the ones helped to becoming volunteers in their teen years, and eventually, after gaining skills and maturity, they were hired as staff members. This internal pipeline creates a unique teaching staff that possesses deep empathy for the students they serve because they have quite literally sat in their chairs.
Life Lesson
Your greatest struggles can become your greatest professional assets if you use them to help others overcome the same obstacles.
Community Significance
Lehi high schoolers and college students are given professional experience that roots them in local service.

Pom Poms and Neighborhood Garages: The Communal Craft of Float Building
Suzanne Pulham recalls a time when building parade floats was a full-community endeavor. Starting at age twelve, she participated in the meticulous process of 'fluffing' tissue paper pom poms while sitting in the bleachers at Vets Park during baseball games. Neighbors and ward members would gather in local garages to assemble the floats, bringing food to share and creating a social hub. The children would run and play among the adults, turning labor into a festive community celebration.
Life Lesson
Shared work and small, repetitive tasks (like fluffing pom poms) can be the foundation of deep community roots and lasting relationships.
Community Significance
It highlights the role of the LDS wards and local parks as the central gathering points for civic pride in mid-20th-century Lehi.

Stepping Up for the Legion
After years of focusing on his career and family, Quinn Allred rejoined the American Legion, initially through the Legion Riders motorcycle group. In 2010, the Lehi Post faced a leadership crisis when the commander suffered a stroke and no one would volunteer to lead. Allred, noticing he was the only Lehi resident in the meeting at the time, stood up and offered to conduct the meetings. What started as a temporary fix turned into fifteen years of service as the Post Commander, a role he is finally retiring from.
Life Lesson
Leadership often begins with the simple willingness to stand up when others are silent.
Community Significance
The American Legion is a cornerstone of Lehi’s civic life, and Allred’s leadership ensured its continued presence and impact.
